VILLAINS

Villains are a new band from Brooklyn, New York. Combining members of such notable groups such as Unearthly Trance, Spaceboy and The Dying Light. They play filthy and confrontational inspired thrash metal. Think Venom and Black Flag watching porn. Grope and grind! Pick up their new CD and listen for yourself. Its out now on Aurora Borealis. I spoke with Teeth, guitar player, about what goes on with Villains......

The one hanging between my legs . . . "My Favorite Member"

5. What do you like more, writing or rehearsing.....playing live or recording?
Rehearsing and playing live.

6. Is the band a linear identity or a multi-dimensional entity?
Very multi-dimensional. The five of us all have several dimensions to contribute to songwriting, lyrics, artwork and performance - in no particular order.

7. Sum up Villains in one word!
Sadistic.

8. Nik Turner or Lemmy Kilmister?
Lemmy, my friend. I saw a cobbled together version of Hawkwind about 15 years ago and I didn't like it. I saw a 60-something Lemmy and his Motorhead group recently and they rocked the house.

9. Does it have to be loud to be heavy?
No, but it helps.

10. Are you involved in any other bands, projects, recordings?
I play in an improv-rock band called The Godoys, an improv-jazz band called J.A.P.P., and a nameless Rudimentary Peni cover band.

11. Are you opposed to the industrial shift from the physical CD/LP to digital music? Will it effect Villains?
Do you mean will it affect Villains? There's not much of an "industrial shift" from CD to digital music. A CD is digital music, and LPs are recorded digitally too. I assume you mean the interknob. Villains has a website with info and fotos and digital sound files. This means of promotion has helped Villains, but we are very into "Record Albums" - meaning a package that you open up play on your stereo, and stare at while listening.

12. How do you feel about playing live in the daytime?
We've never done it, but we've been itching to play parties since we started the band.

13. Does music have to have reference points, is it possible to create it without?
Music doesn't have to have anything. It's possible to create it with just about everything, you know? Like the olde days with a stick and some cowhide, or a seashell.

14. What are Villains' reference points?
Beer, Sodom, Whiskey, Chemistry, Slayer, Grass, Venom, Knives, Hellhammer, Chicks, Guitars, Food, Fingernails (the band), Women, Broken Glass, Aggression

15. Next on the schedule for Villains (touring, records, etc.)?
We're planning on going to England in the summer. Our CD "Drenched In The Poisons" just came out on Aurora Borealis and the vinyl version is coming out in the Spring on Nuclear War Now! Productions. We're doing a split 7" with the Italian legends, Fingernails that Nuclear War Now! is gonna put out. New songs are coming together faster than ever with no shortage of surprises. Musical chairs!

Saviours are a traditional rock 'n' roll band. For instance, they play hard. They bang on their instruments. They tour. And they sweat. All very traditional things for a "rock" band to do.

With only an LP and 10" EP under their belts, Saviours is a touring band, reaping the fruits of the road: endless nights and early mornings of headbanging, intoxication and fornication. These long haired Oaklandites have won crowds over by exploiting the magnetic attraction of harmonized guitars and never ignoring the power of sheer volume. Armed with road warrior fullstacks, Saviours' muscular live sound suits gigs in backyard, warehouse, and rock club alike.

With a new LP in the works, they will have the opportunity to test their sound in European stadiums with fellow American darlings of expansive metal, Mastodon, this Spring of 2007.

What was it in your lives or in the world at large that made the core members of Saviours change musically and mentally from good-times boogie rock and politically-minded punk to Satanic metal?
Natural progression of things, we've always just done what we've felt and done it with our bros.

Please explain the meaning behind the pun-titles of both of your releases? Is Warship a ship that praises something else? Is Crucifire a crucifixion by fire or . . . ?
We feel there is no explanation necessary.

How do you define Saviours' brand of Satanism?
I just write about shit going on in my mind and the references to Satanic shit is about my approach to life. Most of our songs are just about our journey; partying, fucking, and having a killer time. No fucking rules. If it feels good, do it - raw animal lust.

Do the members of the group participate in the "Satanic Alchemy" mentioned in the lyrics? If so in what way?
Yes. Being stoked, doing whatever the fuck you want, and living outside the world.

Are Satanic rituals - other than the live musical sort - performed by the band as a group?
Yes.

I've seen Austin on lead vocals with an Explorer and Tyler on lead guitar with a Jackson Flying V. How do the early masterworks of Hetfield and Hammett influence Saviours?
They make us shred harder because they are so good. Tyler and I having the 'tallica guitars just happened, like everything else in the band, there is not an explanation for much, it just is.

The historical musical reference points of your group lead to early 80’s metal like Iron Maiden, Trouble, and others, yet your brand of metal doesn't come across as retro. What do you feel is the main reason for this accomplishment?
Don't know. We just write riffs, I'm sure our influences come out in our music but we don't wear the fuckers on our sleeves, we're just doing our own thing.

Who of you writes the incredibly catchy, melodic music?
Scott writes the majority of our riffs, but Tyler is the melodic master.

How do you decide when to simply riff, to harmonize, double each other, etc. in a given song.
We hear it and then do it.

What do you listen to - either in the van or by yourselves - that no one would think your band would listen to?
Ultimate Spinach, Twink, Steely Dan, Bill Withers, Kashmere Stage Band, Townes Van Zandt, David Axelrod, Lindsey Buckingham......

What are some non-musical inspirations which inspire your music and lyrics. Surroundings, books, animals, regions of the world, etc. ?
The occult, drugs, women, and loud music.

Your bio mentions the black metal groups Bathory and Venom. Musically, I don't see the connection. What "vibe" do you think Saviours shares with these legends?
Pissed evil music.

Most Satanic bands have historically played at a thrash tempo, twice as fast or more, yet Saviours stay in a rock tempo consistently. Was this a conscious decision? Will Saviours ever speed up?
No, we just do what we feel. Don't know.

You guys tour constantly - locally and nationally. What is the most exciting band you guys have played with that no one outside their town may have heard about?
Titan, Mammatus, California Love.

Is there a new album in the works?
Yes, we're almost halfway done writing it.

How does the new material differ from the old?
I don't know, I'd guess you’d have to hear it.

How is the new material similar to the old?
Get in the van!

Iron Maiden or Judas Priest ? Why?
Both of ‘em, ‘Cause they play ripping music!

What have you to say to the fans at home?
We have a live 12" coming out soon and we're working on new stuff for a new lp to be recorded and released this year. we are touring with mastodon then Red Sparowes and then we have a bunch of rad tours in the works for the rest of the year.

-Personally, It's not that fun to sit at home downloading music. I prefer to be in a record shop physically,

-Good question. We might sound better at night. On a bad day I might not feel anything at
all.

-The ones that doesnt tend to sound like shit.

A: 1983 - 1988 Metallica. Jesus, that's such a generic answer but it's true. It's the album that changed my life.
S: That question is way to hard to answer, I guess right now it would be Black Flag's My War.

3. Favorite current band/album?
A: The Dream is Dead - "Hail the New Pawn" is fucking incredible. The Dead Child EP is the shit also. All TV on the Radio.
S: Pissed Jeans/Shallow.

A: "The Nature Boy" Rick Flair
S: Jake "the Fucking Snake" Roberts. Combining boa constrictors and crack never seemed like much fun until that wonderful man came into the ring.

A: Definently playing live
S: I definitely enjoy playing live more than recording.

A: Our band is a pan dimensional space-time continuum disruptor.
S: Ummmmmmmm... I don't know what that means. All I got was my GED.

A: I don't know, let me check the answering machine.

A: No musical projects but I have some comedy stuff that I do on the side. Can't you tell? All my answers have been so dreadfully hilarious. HAHA LOL !!!!!!

11. Are you opposed to the industrial shift from the physical CD/LP to digital music? Will it effect Pusher?
A: I don't care how people get their music as long as they listen and support the bands. Paying rent is nice though.
S: I am somewhat opposed to it. Digital music (to me anyway) ruins the asthetic of actually owning the record. The artwork and the lyrics are an essential part of a record. I don't really see it effecting us.

12. How do you feel about playing live in the daytime?
A: Do we get drink tickets?
S: I feel like it would be the same as playing at night time. Just a bit brighter.

13. Does music have to have reference points, is it possible to create it without?
A: I don't think music has to have reference points, but if it does, they all need to be cited and included in the bibliography that I put in your syllabus at the beginning of the semester.
S: That question could have a lot of different answers. So I'll just save some time by saying no.

14. What are Pusher's reference points?
A: The Enclyclopedia Briattanica
S: Well, from a lyracal standpoint I like to stick with a thesaurus.

15. Next on the schedule for Pusher (touring, records, etc.)?
A: SXSW, posssbily FuckYeahFest and some sporadic dates throughout. This spring/summer we are releasing a limited edition cassette on Robotic Empire and the CD will be available on Cold Sweat Records. Then later this year we are recording material for a three-way split cd with Pusher, Ed Gein, and Graf Orlock. So check it out.

This week it's an interview with New York's purveyors of grooved out, neo-prog metal TITAN. They're new record "A Raining Sun Of Light And Love, For You And You And You..." on Tee Pee Records conjures up Deep Purple at their most expansive and Hawkwind at their heaviest. Joshua Jade Anzano, 28, Leo w/ Scorpio rising. my weapon of choice is an early mid 70's Fender Mustang with Gibson mini-humbuckers.

Slayer - reign in blood

3. Favorite current band/album?
Growing - Color Wheel

4. Favorite film/TV show? Film:
right now it's 'Children of Men'. TV show: COPS.

5. What do you like more, playing live or recording?
Recording. while i do enjoy playing out and getting the chance to go all nuts and play at obscene volumes, i really love the recording process. from the preparation and conceptualizing, to getting to try out different tones, sounds, gear, instruments, ideas, etc. it's when you finally get to excercise any creative ideas you might have had and really get to shape the music you've been practicing and playing for god knows how long. when we were recording "Obelisk Orbit Overdrive" on "A raining sun..." i had this idea i had wanted to try for a while which entailed running an oscillator through an auto-tuner. luckily the studio we were in had both, and while it took some time to set up and ultimately didn't work exactly the way we had hoped, it was a fun experiment and was satisfying to at least try it. if i hadn't i would still be obsessing about it right now.

6. Is the band a linear identity or a multi-dimensional entity?
I would say more multi-dimensional. while lately we are focusing more on the heavier more metal sounding progrock aspects in our songwriting, we still reserve moments to work on long repetetive trance inducing jams. it's a very different aesthetic where with one the players are very aware and focused on being at the right place at the right time and really nailing the parts and changes. while the other is just making sure we're locked in tight and from there all we have to do is just just trip out, with anything else being introduced in the mix being more textural than riff based. Though similarly both styles are very focused on being a driving force that plows through.

7. Favorite song on your new record and why?
Track number four "Afruf Der Pilz". i think the origin of the song and the decision for placement make this one a bit more special and purposeful. it's our only track on any of our recordings that we originally improvised and then re-learned from the recording. The three tracks before that are somewhat of a heady affair until you get dropped off at this one which is drastically different but works with the others. Then it continues to ride out without really slowing down. Letting the listener know we have nothing really to prove other than wanting you to have a good time.

8. Ozzy or Dio?
Well, heavy metal legend has it that a cult of tripped out stonehenge ritual satanists placed a hex on the Sabs for not playing their lame show. So Ozzy flipped and had his old man fashion the whole band crosses which they wore around their necks for protection. Years later Dio was throwing a hex in the form of the horns to a new legion of dirtheads. That little thing that heshers everywhere used and still use religiously he took from his fucking GRANDMA. Why Ozzy believed in a threat by a group of satanists is beyond me. but if faries wear boots i suppose it isn't that weird. i think the answer here is obvious.

10. Are you involved in any other bands, projects, recordings?
I do a fair amount of home recording of synth music and have been filling in on bass once a week for my friends Kristy and Ronnies band. i've also been in cahoots with some buddies of mine about starting a fast hardcore band along the lines of Dropdead, 7 Seconds, Discharge, etc after talking about how much fun it was playing in a punk rock band. I'm also in a bicoastal band with guys from Saviours and look back and laugh called "Stormtripper". But the burly practice schedule of Titan makes it kind of hard to be really productive with other projects though it's still fun to entertain those ideas. We do have plans for a Titan / Cloudland Canyon collaboration when we head down to Memphis in March. Oh yea, Dave our drummer plays in a Misfits tribute band called Psycho 78. they only play about once a year, but that one show is always a great time and usually ends with lots of sweat and a few bloody noses.

11. Are you opposed to the industrial shift from the physical CD/LP to digital music?
Will effect Titan? No. It's the natural progression/extension of technology and music that we all saw coming a million miles away. it's also sort of difficult to really be opposed to nature. The inception of Titan was already pretty far beyond the transition of the physical and purely digital mediums. so i think any effects there may have been were already a default when we started. however i think since we are all aware of this, there are different creative aspects we are more conscious of in regards to releases. for instance putting a lot more TLC into the packaging and artwork for our physical releases enough to where we hope that listeners would feel just as drawn into the visual aesthetic as much as the music to want to own a copy. On the other hand the less tangible medium lends itself to exposing any ideas, experiments, home recordings, etc. when to anyone who wants to listen without any of the compromise that exists when commiting to a physical medium.

12. How do you feel about playing live in the daytime?
totally into it, man. though i don't think we have had the opportunity to do so yet. but the daytime is usually when we're more alert and lively. plus when i think of playing in the daytime i automatically associate it with the outdoors, and i'm way into the idea of playing in the open with the sun beaming down all over. i mean, 99.9% of the time it sounds like shit to anybody listening. but who gives a fuck if you get to be outside.

13. Does music have to have reference points, is it possible to create it without?
NO? YES? who knows. i mean what about those elephants in thailand that made that nutso elephant music with instruments that had been left out for them. who knows where that came from. Ok. while maybe music doesn't have to have reference points, inevitably it will. even if somebody makes a totally new style of music that doesn't sound like anything before it, i'm sure they would have tried to avoid those other styles. which in itself is referencing something for what not to do whether it was a conscious or subconscious effort.

14. What are Titan's reference points?
the most obvious being the most killer of 70's prog, proto-metal & german psychedelic music. bands we actively rip/ripped off being Hawkwind, Lucifer's Friend, Ashra, Yes, Black Flag, ELP, Parson Sound, FTB, some other shit. people have also compared us to music we weren't aware we we're copping. After we opened up for Blue Cheer, Duck the guitar player told Kris that his synth playing was very "jan hammer-esqe" to which he replied "oh yea man! definitely. thanks man!". two minutes later when Duck leaves the room Kris turns me to and says "who the fuck is jan hammer?". i've also gotten a couple comments that certain parts of our songs sound like Genesis even though i'm pretty sure not one of us could name a single Genesis song.

15. Next on the schedule for Titan (touring, records, etc.)?
Well in March we're doing a few things in Austin for SXSW while playing a few shows on the way down and we have plans to hit the west coast pretty hard in july. First heading to the northwest of the US and going south through CA and at some point (hopefully never) coming back to NYC. I'm sure our sweet myspace profile will have all that shit listed for anybody who cares.

Long-running Oakland, California-based industrial / alternative / metal pioneers NEUROSIS have been confirmed as the main headliner of the 12th annual Roadburn Festival, Saturday April 21, 2007.

THE MELVINS & the legendary BLUE CHEER will headline Friday, April 20th -CLUTCH will also play the festival's mainstage on the Friday Roadburn date.

Seminal American drone-metal / psychedelic [hard]rock evangelists Neurosis will headline Roadburn Festival. Neurosis will play a one-off show on the festival's mainstage, Saturday, April 21st, 2007.

As if this wasn't enough sonic overload, the mainstage will also host the stripped down, voluminous bass extrapolations, and hypnoticdrum mantras of OM, the esoteric melodic guitar-surrealists, Red Sparowes and The Hidden Hand's take on doom, plus the glacially-paced downtuned riffs of Acid King.

Meanwhile over at the festival's Green Room, instro-sorcerers Pelican will headline [please note: Pelican won't clash with Neurosis as there will be NO simultaneous shows during the main-headliner].

Also on the bill are Finland's very own avant-metalists Circle, doing a one-off show, cult drone-outfit Growing, and Spanish doomsters Orthodox. Plus, make sure you check out the heavy psych After Party with Colour Haze's stonerrock-influenced guitar-jams.

On the Bat Cave stage: Joe Preston's [of Melvins-fame] Thrones, the instrumental riff extrapolations of Stinking Lizaveta, Amenra's noise core, Black Cobra's singular buzz bomb slurry core, and Monkey3's lysergic instru-soundscapes.

Doors open: 15.00hrs - Start: 16.00hrs.

The Melvins will headline the Friday Roadburn date. The Melvins were the first post-punk band to revel in the slow, sludgy sounds of Black Sabbath. Their music is oppressively slow and heavy, only without any of the silly mystical lyrics or the indulgent guitar solos —it's just one massive, oozing pile of dark slime [All Music Guide]. The band's latest album, "(a) Senile Animal" has two drummers on every track and therefore a sound which is certain to providea re-definition of your neighborhood watch's list of offenses.

The Melvins will bring along Big Business as both Jared Warren and Coady Willis, the guys from Big Business, are part of the Melvins too now-a-days. Big Business will play before The Melvins as their set flows directly into the Melvins. Dale Crover will join them on guitar.

Seminal fuzz-rock pioneers Blue Cheer will also be doing a one-off show at Roadburn 2007, co-headlining the festival's main stage, Friday, April 20th, 2007. Dickie Peterson, Paul Whaley & Andrew 'Duck' MacDonald will put emphasis on their legendary albums, "Vincebus Eruptum" & "Inside Outside", guaranteed to free both your ass and bedeviled mind! Hollands very own Orange Sunshine will open up for The Cheer.
The band plays a heady, explosive, fuzzed-out mix of garage-acid-punk and proto hard rock with Detroit-rock simplicity and the very soul of amphetamine driven blues.

Electrifying groove-rock behemoths Clutch will also be playing Roadburn's mainstage...

Meanwhile, over at the festival's Green Room: Seminal Krautrock evangelists Guru Guru will headline, playing legendary tracks as 'Space Baby' and 'Der LSD March' amongst others.
Also on the bill are the lysergic guitar swirls of Pharaoh Overlord, the six-string mayhem of Sun Dial, and Porn straddling the line between drone and heavy sludge / riff rock. Plus a fuzzed-out After Party with the delirious guitar-freak outs of Denmark's garage-psych monsters Causa Sui.

On the Bat Cave stage: heavy 70's afficinado's Josiah & Siena Root, guitar-psychonauts On Trial, and the classic spacerock of Earthling Society. Plus a Psycho-delic After Party with Germany's own Volt & Rotor.

Renowned art-designers Malleus will expose their poster-art at Roadburn 2007. Malleus' art has been featured in the books: The Art of Modern Rock, by Dennis King and Paul Grushkin, together with artists such as Kozik, Derek Hess, Coop, etc, as well as "Swag posters of the Nineties" by Judith Salavetz.

Orange Goblin will attend the Roadburn Festival as DJ's. Expect DJ set's from Ben Ward and probably Chris & Martyn as well. The band won't play at the festival though. DJ Kozmik Kenb will be spinning records at the 12th Roadburn Festival too -the same goes for Santtu from Finland's DarkSun.

1. Crom at 3 Clubs in Los Angeles: Total mayhem. Everyone was nearly naked and beer drenched by the end of the night. Crom is very, very powerful.
2. Saviours at the Mountain Bar: Hail Saviours! My favorite band this year. They get better and better.
3. Big Buisness at the Scene Bar in Glendale: Jared transformed himself into a human pizza box.
3. The 666 Show with High on Fire, Crom, Oxbow, Nachmystium and a million others: So many nice people.
4. Mastodon at the Henry Fonda Theatre: I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't working. But always amazing live.
5. Iron Maiden at the big corporate named arena down in Orange county: A beautiful evening. Bruce Dickenson is heroic. Best vocalist ever.
6. Burning Brides at the Fuck Yeah Fest at the Echo: Besides 400 Blows and the Brides, all those other bands sucked ass. Just Horrible. Who are those people? Now do you understand my obsession with the Court TV network?
7: Sunn0))) and Boris at the Echo: Honestly I can't remember if that was this year or last. I think I lost my overies that night.

Sad day here at the TV Eye offices. Just after the exceptional documentary release and 2 disc CD set, Oregon's Dead Moon have called it a day after 2 decades of balls to the walls rock n roll! Sub Pop posted this: "After 20 yrs.....It has been a journey we will always treasure and feel that a worldwide family has emerged in its place. Dead Moon became much bigger than the band itself, it became a DIY underground hopeful for a lot of people. The candle is still burning." We're bumming! Long Live Dead Moon!!
